Zest & Light: The Lemon celebrates the brightness of freshly cut citrus, capturing the moment when light transforms its vivid yellow flesh against a deep, shadowed background.

For this original oil painting, the artist sliced the lemon herself and studied how its colour changed under carefully positioned light. What interested her most was the contrast: the brilliant yellow of the fruit appeared even more intense as it emerged from the surrounding darkness.

Look closely and the lemon reveals far more than a single shade of yellow. Soft golden tones, pale translucent areas and tiny highlights appear across the individual segments, while the textured rind provides a natural boundary between the illuminated flesh and the shadows beyond.

The composition takes inspiration from the chiaroscuro technique of the Old Masters, where light and darkness work together to create depth and visual drama. Here, that classical influence is applied to an ordinary piece of fruit, inviting us to notice the colour, structure and complexity hidden within something so familiar.
